VIDEO: Hundreds of cyclists take to Dublin streets to demand Minister Ross allocate 10% of transport budget to cycling
“Cycling offers a wide range of benefits to our society including reducing carbon emissions, relieving congestion, improving health and making our towns safer, more pleasant places to live and move about.
“Unfortunately, the resources allocated to cycling at present are nowhere near sufficient to make it a safe and normal activity for people of all ages and abilities. “Therefore, we are calling on Minister Ross to:
1.) Allocate at least 10% of the Transport Budget to cycling.
2.) Implement the National Cycle Policy Framework in full.
3.) Take action to reduce transport emissions so that Ireland fulfils its obligations under the Paris Agreement on Climate Change.”
At the protest on Wednesday Dublin Cycling Campaign chairperson Muireann O’Dea said:
“The Government target is for 10 per cent of journeys to be made by bike by 2020 yet the allocation for both walking and cycling in the capital budget for Transport 2017 – 2022 is just 1 per cent. That’s just €100 million out of a total of €10 billion.”
Damien Ó Tuama from the campaign said the group handed a letter in to Minister for Transport Shane Ross’s office and invited him to meet them but he was not available.
