We’re looking for student contributors!
26 November 2021
Earlier this week, we announced that we’re going down a different road come the New Year.
Coverage of our environmental crises has definitely picked up speed over the past couple of years, but we want to dig deeper.
We want to dive into issues that typically get less airtime in this beat – and we’re going to be doing that through features, explainers, analysis, op-eds and whatever else we can think of.
We’re going to be looking at how adaptation measures to our already 1.1 C-warmed world are going. We’re going to connect the dots wherever we see them between this crisis and all the other ones that live alongside it. We’re going to reach out to those experiencing the worst of the climate crisis and we’re going to dive into the biodiversity emergency.
And we want the future of journalism right there with us as we do it, so we’re putting out a call to student contributors.
If you’re a current third-level journalism student interested in pulling together some original reporting on the topics listed above, we want to hear from you. (If you’re not currently enrolled in a programme but still have a piece you’d like to do, let us know and we’ll try to work something out.)
We unfortunately cannot provide commission fees for the time being (but we’re working on it!) – however, we can provide you with as much professional guidance as we possibly can.
We will offer detailed, one-on-one feedback sessions for whatever pieces you publish and we’ll also run workshops on whatever you think will be helpful as you kick off your career. We’ll also run pitch meetings over Zoom and we’ll help you hone how you present stories to an editor.
As you’ve also got your course work, hobbies, lives and books to read, we’ll also work around a schedule that best suits you.
Interested in joining us on this new venture? Here’s what to put in an email to us:
- A quick paragraph introducing yourself and why you’re interested in climate journalism
- A pitch for a story you’d like to publish with us in the new year
- An attached writing sample of your choosing.
Send that to editor@greennews.ie by 15 December, and we’ll reach out to you as soon as we’re back at our desk in 2022.
Have any questions in the meantime? You can send them to that above email address, too.
Looking forward to chatting to you all and stay warm!
