Global Action Plan’s Discovering Biodiversity in a Community Garden recognised at Heritage Week Awards

Global Action Plan Ireland’s workshop for National Heritage Week was acknowledged at the Heritage Week Awards, finishing runner up in the Cool for Kids section.
The Cool for Kids award is presented to event organisers that encourage children and families to participate in National Heritage Week.
GAP’s workshop, which was held on August 25th, 2016, concentrated on biodiversity in a Ballymun community garden and was deemed a resounding success.
Children explored and unearthed the natural environment in their own community garden, discovering all the wonderful living things that call it home, through games, planting activities and a bug hunt.
The event was “delivered in a fun and practical setting where urban explorers were taken into nature and got their hands dirty. Everyone, young and old, left with a greater awareness of the need to protect our natural heritage.”
Heritage Council CEO, Michael Starrett, acknowledged the efforts of all the shortlisted candidates to promote sustainability and, “their dedication to the conservation, protection and promotion of local heritage and community.”
Global Action Plan Ireland is part of GAP International- a global network operating in over 27 countries that work towards facilitating behavioural change to promote environmental sustainability.
GAP Ireland’s 4 main themes are water, energy, food and waste. Informed by the latest developments in climate and environmental science, they focus on environmental education and professional training with the aim being to support people to live more sustainably.
