What’s On This Weekend for Biodiversity Week

Biodiversity Week is coming to a close so don’t miss your last chance to celebrate Ireland’s diverse flora and fauna by taking part in some terrific events this weekend.
Biodiversity Week is a nationwide series of events taking place over ten consecutive days from 19th – 28th May 2017, and this weekend has lots in store! Why not meander along the Grand Canal path with the Irish Wildlife Trust, celebrate the great oak at Tomnafinnoge woods, or splash about courtesy of the great North Atlantic Ocean at Grattan Beach, Salthill. Take part in a seashore exploration and learn all that the Irish Whale and Dolphin Group know on their specialist subject.
Preparation and Appreciation of a Pollinator-friendly Urban Landscape
Join us for a two-part workshop on creating pollinator-friendly urban environments. Part one will be an indoor presentation on pollinators and their habitat requirements. Part two will take place outdoors on the grounds of Kilkenny Castle, and will involve carrying out field work on bumble bees and pollinator-friendly planting schemes including trees, shrubs, pond, meadow and garden.
Grand Canal Biodiversity Walking Tour, Dublin: Walk, Explore, Enjoy
Join the Irish Wildlife Trust for this event where we will be taking a gentle stroll up and down the Grand Canal path to see the wildlife around this time of year. This is a linear walk starting and finishing at McEvoys Pub (so maybe finish off with a warm drink if the pub is open).

Coastal Biodiversity Walk at The Wicklow Murrough
Join the Irish Wildlife Trust in exploring the coastal biodiversity of Broad Lough and the Murrough wetlands. Broad Lough is an intertidal Lough fed by the Vartry River and draining to sea at Wicklow Harbour. A walk along the shore will provide the visitor with views of a great variety of waterbirds and the chance to see Otters fishing and playing in the Lough.

Beenbawn Head Nature Walk
Bernard Goggin, a naturalist with a lifetime’s experience of nature, will lead a walk commencing at 2pm from Beenbawn carpark. The talk will provide an introduction to the attractive halophytic flora and marine zonation found in this area. The walk will take in a spectacular canyon like passage to a beach created over centuries by farmers collecting sand and seaweed.
