While communities are still reeling from this winters devastating flooding environmental groups have offered some solutions. Today the Environmental Pillar published twenty recommendations to protect communities and their natural environment from future deluges.
Forests, bogs, and wetlands can all play a valuable role in slowing down water and protecting homes and farms from flood waters. Theresa O’Donohoe, Convenor of the Climate Change working group of the Environmental Pillar, spoke to Near FM this week about using nature to prevent the kind of devastating flooding we have seen this winter.
A 10 hectare blanket bog has been acquired by the Irish Peatland Conservation Council (IPCC) and will be their first nature reserve in Kerry.
“Dredging is not always the solution for flooding. It may help to sort out a local problem but it may also transport the problem downstream, sometimes from rural to urban areas where the damage on properties and economic activities can be much higher.”
Devastating winter flooding could be up to eight times more frequent because of climate change, flooding expert has warned.
